After hearing that a mortgage provider was insisting that a landlord evict a tenant on housing benefit or not be eligible to remortgage their property, the RLA (Residential Landlords Association) is urging the government to tackle discrimination against tenants on benefits by mortgage providers. The RLA has found that two thirds of providers who represent 90% of the buy to let market prohibit letting to people on benefits. The RLA has written to the Treasury minister responsible for banking urging them to use their influence in banks where the government has shares to end such discriminatory practices.
It also wants the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) to investigate.
The RLA believe that these practices discriminate against some of the most vulnerable members of society
