In an address to the Northern Housing Consortium’s annual summit, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has again called on housing to be made a human right, stating that everyone should have the right to a home, and that it should be “enshrined in UK law”.
Burnham also spoke about the creation of a Greater Manchester Good Landlords programme to tackle poor conditions in the private rented sector.
He additionally wants to bring back the links between health and housing.
Andy Burnham had called for housing to be made a human right earlier this year, in May when he wrote to the Conservative, Labour and Liberal leaders suggesting legislation to make safe housing a basic human right like healthcare and education. The Mayor has committed to ending rough sleeping in Greater Manchester by 2020.
