Kent County Council is considering a pilot scheme to help care leavers obtain privately rented accommodation by acting as their guarantor.
When young people in care turn 18 the local authority is no longer responsible for the young person financially or for providing accommodation. Care leavers may need to claim benefits if they are not in employment or education. They are unlikely to have family members to act as a guarantor and this puts them at a disadvantage in securing accommodation. The council’s Corporate Parenting Panel will be considering a detailed plan for the pilot scheme on 1 June 2018.
